The legacy of Dougherty Dental began when Dr. William Eugene Dougherty opened the doors to his downtown Portland dental practice in the summer of 1942. A recent graduate from North Pacific Dental College (now OHSU), Dr. Dougherty quickly established a booming and successful business due to his proficiency and skill with gold work and tooth extraction. Outside of dentistry, William had a love of duck hunting, a passion that can still be seen from time to time around Dougherty Dental as the occasional mallard figurine turns up in seemingly unlikely places.
Dr. John Dougherty joined his father's side at Dougherty Dental in the summer of 1972 after graduating from Oregon Dental School (now OHSU). Together William and John took the dental practice to new heights, including relocating to Dougherty Dental's current location at 1809 NW Davis St in the late 1970s. The father and son team practiced side by side until Dr. William Dougherty's eventual retirement in the early 1990s.
The third generation of Dougherty Dental joined the team when Dr. Scott Dougherty graduated from OHSU School of Dentistry in the summer of 2011. The dental office was once again a father-son team. The picture above is a photo taken shortly after Dr. Scott Dougherty's graduation, and shortly before the passing of Dr. William Eugene Dougherty. A few very special people can boast they have been patients for all three generations of dentists at Dougherty Dental.
With Dr. John Dougherty nearing retirement, Dr. Andrew Laybourn joined the team at Dougherty Dental after graduation from OHSU School of Dentistry in the summer of 2013. Dr. Scott Dougherty and Dr. Andrew Laybourn have been close friends since early childhood, setting goals to practice dentistry together beginning in high school.
