. If you are worried about losing your smile or the structure in your face because of lost teeth, talk to us today about dental implants and how they can help. The entire process is completed within a few appointments, taking place over a span of several months. At the end of the entire process, you are left with beautiful teeth that look just like your natural teeth - no one will be the wiser!
The first step is determining if you are a good candidate for dental implants; patients with advanced gum disease
or bone loss will have to undergo separate treatments to rectify those situations before obtaining implants. For the patients with bone loss, the first step will be a bone graft procedure. This simple procedure requires the use of bone from another part of your body or that of a synthetic material which is then implanted into your jawbone area. This helps to thicken the area up, allowing dental implants to be successful once the area heals.
The SurgeryOnce your mouth is determined ready for the dental implant procedure, we will surgically place the titanium screws. This is done by administering anesthesia (the type depends on your physical and mental health) and opening up your gum line to gain access to your jawbone. Once the jawbone is accessed, the screws are placed and the area is closed up with stitches. The stitches are then removed between 7-14 days after the surgery, but your mouth is left to heal for a period of several months.
Placing the Dental CrownsOnce we have determined that the area is fully healed, we will place the post on the implant. The post is what will hold the dental crown, since you do not have any tooth surface for it to attach onto. Once the post is placed, your custom made porcelain crown, which matches the color and shape of your other teeth is placed. This is a permanent solution, which means once we place it, there are no more procedures to undergo. What you are left with is a beautiful replacement tooth or teeth that look and act like your natural teeth.
At Dougherty Dental, we want our patients to fully understand the benefits of dental implants. They not only provide you with a beautiful smile and the ability to chew, but they preserve your jawbone and smile for the rest of your life. Your face and jaw need that stimulation of your teeth in order to stay intact. If you are unable to keep your natural teeth, dental implants are the perfect replacement.
